I recently made another papier maché mask using cardboard as the framework to form the head shape and beak. I added some net fabric to make the fluffy effect of the feathers around the beak and eyes. It’s painted with acrylic paint and some acrylic gold ink here and there as well as a coating of iridescent medium to give it a subtle sheen. Wearing this mask feels like being inside a cave. It feels dark and comforting, primeval almost.
Barn Owl is a bird I return to again and again. There is something special about its ghostly white appearance and silent flight. Something otherworldly and ethereal. They definitely feel like messengers from the spirit world. To me Barn Owl medicine is about autonomy and a clear sense of self, moving through the landscape with surety and precision.
